Self-study ideas for pre-entry students

We reached the end of the year with my basic

We reached the end of the year with my basic ESOL Literacy group last week. Obviously there were parties, trips and fond farewells but I was also keen to give them some ideas for how they can keep their English ticking over during the holiday. I reached out to Linked in and the worksheet below is the result! I gave each student a copy and we spent an hour or so trying out the sites, downloading apps and checking everyone knew how to use the resources. I’m hoping the You Tube channel I am building will provide plenty of practice too (search for ‘My Homework Today’ and read my earlier blog post for more details). Of course this is not an exhaustive list – please do comment below this post if you have any suggestions to add to the list.

  1. The worksheet contains some excellent ideas. I also think buddy learning works really well. It could be a friend, family member, befriender, or another learner who understands and speaks a bit more. They can meet up twice a week for an hour; maybe at a café, at home, or in the park to listen to stories, name household items and practise everyday conversations together.

    1. Thank you for this Marta and I love this idea! Some students mention this in guidance and I totally agree that it’s a great way for them to boost their English. I wonder if Idea#3 in the worksheet could be tweaked? For instance, it could be changed to ‘Get help from a friend’? What do you think?
