Download the free PDF and Power Point slides below and use the worksheet to help your students learn vocabulary and practise their speaking, reading and writing through a lesson all about weddings. There is enough here for a full lesson plus homework!
I used this with a pre-entry group but consisting of a very mixed-level. I prefer longish texts for this which are more difficult towards the end as the stronger students can get on with something challenging to read while I can give extra support to weaker learners with just the first few lines. These students don’t need to read the entire text, just the opening sentences.
Here’s my lesson plan:
-
- Use the pictures in the first two Power Point slides to clarify the vocabulary orally first before the group try the first matching task (page 1). Drill a few phrases and then get them chatting in groups about weddings in their countries.
-
- Refer back to the pictures to discuss weddings in the UK with the group, asking questions like ‘Where are weddings?’ and ‘What does the woman wear?’
-
- Display the text from the Power Point slides and read the text aloud for the group before focusing on some sound-spelling combinations, e.g. “What’s the sound for this letter?” while pointing at the first letter in a word. Read the text aloud as a group. The learners read aloud in pairs before reading aloud all together again.
-
- The students do the comprehension tasks on page 2.
-
- There are some writing tasks on pages 3-5 which culminate in the learners writing about weddings in their own country. They can read these aloud in small groups after they finish.
